The Korean Bell of Friendship is located in San Pedro, California. The bell was given to The United States as a gift from the Republic of Korea. The Statue of Liberty is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of something another country gave the USA. Little did I know one of these gifts was located in Southern California. I found out about the bell from a travel guide put together by DiscoverLA.

korean bell of friendshipOnce I saw the bell in person I knew it had to be on my list of 101 Photo Spots in Los Angeles. It is located at 3601 S Gaffey and isn’t too difficult to find. Parking is free which is always nice. The day I was here it was windy and overcast but the view was still great.

The bell was dedicated in 1976 and underwent a full restoration in 2013. I really liked the pop of color on the inside of the pavilion. There is no clapper inside the bell. It is struck with the red log shown in the picture. It is only struck on New Years Eve, Korean American Day, the Fourth of July, Korean Liberation Day, and Constitution Day.

I think the bell is very interesting though I don’t think it’s worth a trip to San Pedro if that’s the only thing you plan on seeing. There is not much to read about the bell and as pretty as it is I didn’t spend too much time looking at it. Luckily, there are other points of interest nearby that will help make your visit more worth while.

Close to the bell is the Point Fermin Lighthouse which has been used in movies like 500 Days of Summer. The lighthouse is within walking distance so if the weather is nice and you feel up to it I would recommend it. Of course street parking is always an option if driving is the best option for you. The lighthouse was closed when I was there but they do offer free admission when it is open.

It is a very short drive to the beach. While at the beach check out the Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse which is used as a school on the tv show The Fosters. Don’t pay to park at the beach unless there is no street parking available.

Have you ever been to San Pedro? If so what do you recommend doing for fun in the area?
