The Vans US Surf Open is taking place in Huntington Beach, California from July 29th through August 6th. This is an event that I have been meaning to attend ever since I moved back to California and I am so happy that I finally got to go. The Huntington Beach surf competition is an annual event which attracts a large crowd. You can watch surfing, skating, and bmx competitions. Keep reading to find out what you should know before you go.
If you are willing to wake up early you can find free street parking in the residential streets near the pier. Parking near the event can cost up to $45. Should you bring anything with you? I would recommend bringing sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. There is a hydration station near the pier with cold water so that you can refill your bottle throughout the day. There are several games set up that you can play to win prizes. My friend and I got bags, hats, sunglasses, wallets, bandanas and more. The amount of free stuff that you can get at the event is awesome! At noon they even gave out a free hot dog and chips.
You have a chance to win a Vans hat at the various games. However, 25 people every few hours got a chance to get a customized artist hat. These hats are first come, first served and were a big hit with a lot of people at the event. I love how my hat turned out.
Several events take place throughout the day ending with a movie on the beach. After my friend Bruno and I watched the 1pm BMX Flatland Demo he was able to meet and get autographs and pictures with the bikers. Considering how large the event is I was very impressed by how organized and fan friendly everything is. This is so much fun for anyone who loves being outdoors.
