How To See Movies at El Capitan   Recently updated !

El Capitan Theatre

I love going to the movies and because I love going to the movies I like to find theatres that make my experience as great as possible. El Capitan is a theatre that is perfect for those who love movies and for those who love Disney.  El Capitan was built in 1926 and is a beautiful theatre.  Before my first visit to El Capitan I knew that I would be seeing a movie but I was not aware of the special touches that they add to make it a memorable experience. My first time to the theatre was to see Beauty and the Beast in 3d which I was pretty excited about since I had walked past the theatre for years.  I parked underneath the Loews Hotel across the street and got my ticket at the box office out front.  For information on getting discounts for El Capitan please look at the bottom of this post.

When you purchase your ticket you have an option of a general admission ticket or a VIP ticket.  I have never purchased a VIP ticket but it does include a reserved seat, popcorn and a drink so it might be the best deal for you depending on what you want when  you go.  Now you are probably curious about the special touches that I mentioned.  The special touches vary by movie but are pretty great.  For Beauty and the Beast Princess Belle magically appeared before the movie to introduce it.  My mom and I went to see Wreck it Ralph and before the movie they invited children up on stage to play a game that ended with Ralph appearing on the stage.  My mom and I also went to see Frozen and while nothing happened before the show during Let It Go it snowed in the movie theatre.  On the bottom level they have a mini museum where they showcase props from movies that have been shown at the theatre and you might even get to see some special old Hollywood type pictures.

For most movies if you arrive early enough there will be someone playing an organ who does a wonderful job providing entertainment and creating a fun atmosphere.  Last year I scored free tickets to see Muppets Most Wanted and I thought it was adorable that Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy arrived on the stage to perform for the crowd before the movie.  When Brave was out as well as some other movies there was an option to have breakfast with Merida before viewing the movie.  When this offer is available it is on Saturday so if you are in the area and are unable to take your children to Disneyland taking them to the movies and to breakfast with the character might be a great and fun alternative.  Attached to the theatre is a Disney/Ghirardelli Soda shop with cute Disney merchandise as well as a delicious ice cream spot.  On occasion you can get a delicious dessert that will come with a limited edition pin so for Disney pin collectors that might be a winning dessert for you.

In addition to the special touches that the theatre adds to their movies they also host special events.  El Capitan is typically where Disney holds their movie premieres so if you are in the area on a premiere night you can show up and try to see some of your favorite stars.  They also host special events that are 100% open to the public.  Last week El Capitan hosted a one night event where they showed the movie Newsies and had a visit from the Broadway Newsies cast.  On April 9th they will be hosting a throwback thursday event where they will show Robin Hood.  If you have a Facebook I encourage you to like their page so you can find out about their events and also be sure to check out our upcoming events page as I will list their events as well.  If you park underneath the Loews Hotel across the street, which I would recommend, you can get your parking validated at the theatre.

While there is no guarantee almost every movie that plays at El Capitan will have discounted tickets on sites like GoldStar, Groupon, or LivingSocial.  So search for a discount before you purchase your ticket.  Every now and then you can find free tickets to a screening of a movie on the morning it is released at 6am.  Keep an eye out on Facebook and Twitter for movie and concession deals offered by El Capitan.  For information on getting free movie tickets please read this blog post: http://mybelleelle.com/movie-screenings/howtoseemoviesforfree/ Oh and for Disneyland lovers make sure to notice the Disneyland Walk of Fame star in front of the Soda Shop.  And if you do not have time to see a movie you can take a tour!

How To Get Free Jimmy Kimmel Tickets   Recently updated !

This past summer I had a friend come out to visit California for the first time.  I decided to get us tickets to a taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live! so that he could hopefully see a cool celebrity and get to experience Hollywood.  Tickets for the show are free and available to anyone while they last.  The tickets are given out through a website called 1iota (the link will be at the bottom of the post) and 1iota is also the where you can find free tickets to the mini concerts that Jimmy Kimmel hosts periodically in Hollywood.  As a Harry Potter fan I was extremely excited when I found out that Daniel Radcliffe would be a guest on the show the day that my friend and I were going.

The show tapes on Hollywood Boulevard right across from the TCL Chinese Theatre so my friend and I decided to get to the Hollywood area early so that I could show him all the cool things to see before the show starts.  When we noticed a line forming outside of the Jimmy Kimmel building we decided to go across the street and get in line.  We were let inside the building around an hour before the show started so that they could use us as the crowd for Kiesza’s performance.  Kiesza was the musical talent that day and they had us stand in a very small and very warm room where they had her sing her song Hideaway so many times that I cringe when I hear it out in public.  If you are a fan of the musician when you are at a taping then you would enjoy it more but I was holding out for Daniel Radcliffe.

When we were finally led inside the studio my friend and I were thrilled to get away from Kiesza.  We were put in the second row and had a really nice view.  Jimmy came out right before the show started and said hello to the audience before the show began.  On commercial breaks he was interacting a bit with the audience and found out that a couple in front of my friend and I were visiting from New Zealand and Jimmy was shocked to learn that they don’t really have superheroes.  When the show came back on he decided to talk about this couple on air which worked out great for my friend and I as we made it on tv thanks to them!  Daniel Radcliffe came out and it was really great to see him in person.  If you plan on going I would encourage you to allot four hours for the taping and if you are a big fan of the show you do have an option to buy some merchandise at the end of the show.  I would encourage you to park under the Loews Hotel and Dolby Theatre which you can get validated inside the studio.  For other things to do in the area be sure to check out my blog post on the TCL Chinese Theatre: http://mybelleelle.com/celebrity-events/tcl-chinese-theatre-in-hollywood/

TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood   Recently updated !

If you find yourself at Hollywood and Highland let me encourage you to make time to stop by the TCL Chinese Theatre. For years I stayed on the outside of the theatre due to lack of time to go inside but a few years ago I went inside for the first time and loved it.  For those of you who have not been to the theatre on the outside they have cement blocks with hand and foot prints from stars dating back to the very early days in Hollywood hand and foot prints of stars like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe to George Clooney and the cast of Harry Potter.  You will find that everyday visitors stop by and take pictures placing their hands and feet inside the prints of their favorite stars.  Shirley Temple and I have the same hand size but that is the only hand print that mine comes close to fitting.  At least a few times a year the theatre will host an event to honor different celebrities by having a ceremony and adding their hand and foot prints to the collection.

On occasion the theatre will hold contests through instagram and twitter where they will give out vip seats to the ceremonies.  I was lucky enough to get selected through an instagram contest to be a vip for Gena Rowlands ceremony but due to some technological issues I did not find out I had won till it was too late.  So if you enter be sure to check your instagram or twitter account often so you do not miss out on any cool opportunities.  The theatre is also home to several big movie premieres throughout the year so if you are near by you can show up and try to see some stars walk the red carpet.  The theatre also plays hosts to different film festivals on occasion so keep an eye out on their twitter account for any information on that.  I have yet to be able to make it down to the theatre for a red carpet event so I unfortunately cannot say what that experience is like but it is on my to do list.  If you do decide to see a movie here please note that only one movie will be played in the huge impressive theatre, there are some smaller theatres to the side of the main theatre.

Two and a half years ago the theatre was celebrating an anniversary and held special screenings of old movies for 25 cents.  My friend and I went there to see The Godfather which was an incredible place to see that movie for the first time.  The screen is the second largest in the world and is quite impressive.  There are always some props and costumes from various movies in the lobby which is nice to see as well.  Last spring my mom and I decided to take the vip tour of the theatre.  At the time the tour was $13.50 and I will say that you do not see anything on the tour that you would not see if you bought a ticket to a movie.  However, you get to hear a lot of cool stories about the theatre and Sid Grauman the man who created it all.  If you are a huge movie fan the tour is worth the money to hear about the stories.  I encourage you to park underneath the Loews Hotel and the Dolby Theatre.  You can get the ticket validated at the theatre or any of the shops in the area.  You will pay around $2-$22 depending on how long you stay.  Also while you are in the area you may want to take a tour of the Dolby Theatre, home to the Oscars.  Oh and if you get hungry I highly recommend 25 degrees, a burger place at the Roosevelt Hotel across the street.

Cake Q&A with Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer

This event took place on November 19, 2014 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California.  As a huge Jennifer Aniston fan I was thrilled to found out that not only could I see her new movie Cake a few months before it would be released but that Jennifer herself would be coming to the screening to do a q&a afterwards with Jason Bateman.  I found out about the event from following American Cinematheque on Twitter, this is the company that owns the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.  You can join the American Cinematheque as a member which I would recommend if you live close by as some events are members only.  They have screenings with the stars quite often so if this is something that interests you I would encourage you to look at the bottom of this post for staying up to date with their events.

I was very excited to see Cake because I had started seeing articles going around the internet talking about how Jennifer had never done a role like this before and there was some Oscar buzz going around.  The movie is not my cup of tea as it is slow and not very exciting however Jennifer did a remarkable job playing Claire, a woman suffering from chronic pain.  Anna Kendrick’s character Nina, commits suicide before the movie begins and we find out that Claire and Nina were in a support group together.  Throughout the movie Claire sees Nina and this leads her to reach out to Nina’s husband and child.  You realize very early on in the film that Claire is addicted to pain killers and that she seems to have lost her passion for life.  At the beginning of the film I was very annoyed and aggravated with Claire but as the movie progressed and I got to know more about her and what had happened to her it made me more sympathetic towards her.  If you have seen Jennifer Aniston in a movie or from Friends then you know she can do comedy and it is so nice to see her get to explore another type of character.

Following the movie Jason and Jennifer came into the theatre and began the q&a portion.  Jason and Jennifer are good friends so it was fun to see them interact with each other but hearing Jennifer talk about the movie and talk about acting was wonderful.  I recorded a bit of it so be sure to check out the video at the bottom of the post.  After Jason had finished with his questions they opened it up to the audience to ask questions and I really wanted to talk to Jennifer but I could not think of a question.  Jennifer was very kind and gracious is talking to and interacting with the audience.  Sometimes you believe that a celebrity will be just as kind and wonderful and fun as the characters they play and then you get around them and realize that they are not at all someone you would in fact want to hang out with.  I was so delighted to find out that it was the not the case with Jennifer Aniston.  She was everything that I thought she would be!
